Fix The Blogger Template Scrolling Problem

June 30, 2004 | In blogging | No Comments

From WizBangTech

The new version of Blogger has new templates that for some reason have scrolling issues in Internet Explorer. The CSS for the template appears not to work properly in IE. This could be to IE or the template, but do you really care? You just want a fix. Two possibilities for you:

1) Put this: <div style=”clear:both;”></div>
Just before the </body> tag at the bottom of your template. That should fix the scrolling problem.

2) Put this: <?xml version=’1.0′ encoding=’UTF-8′?>
at the top of your template. This allegedly fixes the problem as well.

Traceback or Trackback?

June 30, 2004 | In blogging | No Comments
I started off by installing SharpReader ,an RSS Aggregator for Windows, on the laptop. Then I added BinaryWolf by entering in the URL and clicking the Subscribe button. Experimenting, I right clicked on my new entry and see Link Cosmos (technorati). I clicked on that and see a list of inbound sources. One of those is Paul’s Time Sink with a link back to me. Thanks Paul!
This is a good blog post that describes tracebacks.
O.K. it’s a little ironic that Paul’s Time Sink has a link back to me on a feature that I have yet to implement on BinaryWolf primarily because blogger doesn’t offer it yet. I’ve looked at Haloscan’s solution but didn’t like it. The trackback post is one in a series of posts here at BW defining blogging terminology.

Paul’s Time Sink uses the word traceback instead of trackback. Interchangeable?

Virus, spam and spyware, oh my!

June 30, 2004 | In security | No Comments

With new security holes appearing every day and spy/ad-ware spreading rampantly, the combination of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are becoming increasingly dangerous choices for safe web browsing and e-mail. Yet what is one to do if they can’t or won’t switch from Windows to another operating system? It’s simple: bring the security and power of Open Source applications to Windows. The Mozilla Project’s Firefox web browser and Thunderbird e-mail client do just that, and do it without sacrificing the easy-to-use, clean interface users demand.

Fire Internet Explorer and Outlook Express With Mozilla Alternatives.

Validation

June 29, 2004 | In web design | No Comments

I use HomeSite with CSE HTML Validator to validate for HTML, XHTML, CSS, spelling, and accessibility. Xenu’s Link Sleuth does a great job in checking Web sites for broken links. Today I tried CSE’s link checking capability for more than one page.

# Load HTML Validator and press F2 to go to the Batch Wizard.
# Press Ctrl+N to create a new target list.
# Add a target that specifies the root page of your website. This can be a local file or a URL. To add a local file target, press Ctrl+F. To add a URL, press Ctrl+U. For example, if your site is at “http://www.mydomain.com/mysite/” then press Ctrl+U to add the URL “http://www.mydomain.com/mysite/” to the target list.
# Select the target that you just added and press F5 to view the properties.
# Go to the Follow Links tab and check the follow links checkbox. Click OK.
# Press F4 to go to the Batch Wizard Options and select the “Link check” tool. Click OK.
# Press F6 to start the link check.
At first glance I like xenu better for link checking, but maybe I can filter CSE’s reports to be more useful.

Feedster Added

June 29, 2004 | In blogging | No Comments

Added RSS URL. Submitted Feedburner RSS as it doesn’t require the template changes that Feedster does. I was getting quite a few errors when trying to access some features on this site.

Many, if not most, blogging tools don’t make your own blog easily searchable. And third party search sites like Atomz or even Google don’t index you frequently enough — or correctly enough — to deliver a quality user experience. Now you can use Feedster to make your blog or site searchable.

Strong claim. However, for the time being, I’ll stick with Atomz Express Search. Feedster is worth a return visit to see if the site has improved. That would help to get me to try their search tool.
