Google WebSearch – Money not OT

Friday, June 18th, 2004

As of this post I consider topics about monetizing web pages not to be off topic.

The search function on BinaryWolf is currently powered by atomz. Google is presently promoting the combining of WebSearch with AdSense to monetize more web pages. I like atomz and I am not inclined to switch at this point to Google WebSearch, however, I will keep it in mind for a future look.

At the same time there is this new tool, Google AdSense Preview Tool. Installed and took a quick look at it. You can view ads to see if you would want to filter them out as a way to fine tune the ad selections presented by Google.

Currently, the preview tool is only available for Windows versions of Internet Explorer version 6.x. Click on the Firefox button located in the footer of this page for a superior browser.

What is Trackback?

Thursday, June 17th, 2004

In a nutshell, TrackBack was designed to provide a method of notification between websites: it is a method of person A saying to person B, “This is something you may be interested in.” To do that, person A sends a TrackBack ping to person B. TrackBack ping: a ping in this context means a small message sent from one webserver to another. A Beginner’s Guide to TrackBack is an introduction to TrackBack from a non-technical perspective. The goal is to illustrate how the system can be used to enhance cross-site conversations and build community. Also see How TrackBack Works.

Button Maker

Wednesday, June 16th, 2004

80×15 buttons are popular with bloggers. Here’s an online button maker based on a script by Bill Zeller. The color blender tool offers more help. You could do that, or simply make the whole button in Photoshop. The font used is Jason Kottke’s freeware Silkscreen.
