Small Firewall

Wednesday, July 28th, 2004

A software firewall installed on your laptop is necessary for those visits to Internet cafes.
Windows XP includes Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) software. Howvever, an old Toshiba laptop running Windows 98 with 32 Mb of memory requires a third party solution. Zone Alarm and Norton Personal Firewall both require minimum system RAM of 48 Mb. Upside, the minimum system requirements for Sygate Personal Firewall is only 32 Mb RAM. Downside, is that after installing Sygate, overall performance suffers on an already sluggish machine.

Anyone have a spare Toshiba memory chip (KTT650/64)?

Word of the Day – Deep Web

Tuesday, July 27th, 2004

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The deep web or invisible web is the name given to the publicly accessible pages on the World Wide Web that are not indexed by search engines. It consists mainly of dynamically generated pages that are based on responses to database queries.

Search engines use web crawlers that follow hyperlinks. Such crawlers typically do not submit queries to databases due to the potential infinitude of queries that can be made to a single database.

In a 2000 study by the search company BrightPlanet, the inaccessible part of the web was estimated to be about 500 times larger, in terms of number of documents, than what search engines already provide access to. Any such figures must be taken with caution, however, due to the difficulty of distinguishing between genuinely different documents and documents that merely rep
resent different database views of the same content.

True Myths?

Monday, July 26th, 2004

Canadian Patrick Taylor of The Poison Kitchen writes “Google likes content” and goes on to say:

Don’t waste your time on meta keywords. Google doesn’t rate them highly and other search engines are starting to ignore them because of abuse. Link. Link alot. Google likes links and if your site gets attention from other indexed sites, then it will get promoted in the listings.

Want to boost your link’s rating? Wrap the hyperlink around words people might search for (text in hyperlinks is valued higher by Google so take advantage of it).

Lindsay Lohan

Tuesday, July 20th, 2004

Popular search terms that people are searching for on Yahoo in the last 24 hours are listed in Yahoo Buzz. The Buzz Index World Report – Popular Searches From Around The World has Lindsay Lohan as the number one most popular search entry in the world.

Our data comes from English-language Yahoo! searches that originate from countries outside the U.S. For example, if someone in Brazil (domain – .br) uses yahoo.com to search for “soccer,” that data is calculated as buzz for Brazil.
