Email Address Hiding with CSS

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

Previously we detailed the Enkoderform method to avoid spam from posting your email address on the web.

Here’s another technique using the :before and :after pseudo-elements of CSS. The reader’s comments are pretty interesting.

A lot of people seem to be missing the point of this article. What’s described is nothing more than a proof-of-concept technique; it is by no means perfect, or even the best way of masking your email address. I wrote this because it demonstrates some under-used CSS features that happen to solve a common problem. In the worst case scenario, it works as well or better than most other techniques, and at full steam, it’s pretty nifty.

AOL and Yahoo Certified E-mail

Wednesday, February 8th, 2006

Goodmail has struck a deal with AOL and Yahoo to begin charging and collecting “postage” for guaranteed delivery to the inbox (CertifiedEmail). The sender certified e-mail system imbeds an e-mail with a security token that will be read by participating ISPs, which then mark the e-mail as certified and slip it past any spam filters, directly into the recipient’s inbox.

The question now is how to avoid paying “post offices” to deliver your mail? You may need to ask Yahoo and AOL subscribers to place you in their address book, in effect adding you to their “whitelist” which will get you through the spam filters directly to them. Whitelisting is the process in which an e-mailer’s sending IP address is listed by an ISP as being used by a legitimate e-mailer.

AOL currently has a whitelist request form for bulk e-mailers. AOL open mail access lists tutorials for sending and receiving mail to and from an AOL account via a third party e-mail client. Each e-mail client has its own unique address book and methods of adding contacts. Adding a contact to AOL’s address book using AOL software is described below.

Also below, there are instructions for adding a contact to Yahoo’s address book.

AOL Address Book (AOL Software)

In the Mail menu on the AOL toolbar, click “Address Book”.

  • To edit a contact’s Address Card, click the contact’s Address Card once to select it, then click “Edit”. When the contact’s Address Card appears, click “Edit” again.

Avant Prime Keyboard

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

One of the legendary keyboards of the early PC era was the Northgate Omnikey. You can still find them on eBay, going for a king’s ransom. The Avant Prime, sold by Creative Vision Technologies is a near-clone of the old Omnikey, right down to the clicky, Alps-style metal buckle key mechanism. Unlike most membrane-style keyboards, it’s also more responsive. It’s very durable, if somewhat pricey.

Snake Oil

Monday, February 6th, 2006

Click Here, You Idiot is a parody of the nauseating snake oil style sales page that has words such as MASSIVE, AWESOME and MIND-BLOWING peppered thru the ad copy. Lurid yellow highlights, bold-red-large-font-centered text and horizontal lines are used to convince you to buy now!

… the page design should give it away. There’s no left margin or right column. Stay on track and don’t get distracted. There aren’t links to take you away or navigation bars to confuse you. The goal is to push you to the bottom of the page where there’s a Paypal button. More about that later.

Remember, whenever you send your testimonial, to always include a copy of your passport photo.

Blogtimize! AdSense Optimization Tips

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

Google has posted tips for bloggers wanting to optimize their AdSense earnings. Google likes the medium rectangle between posts. Placing ads where your readers will notice on main pages (after each post) and individual post pages (ads at end of entries and in longer entries mid post as well as above comment boxes) are discussed, as well as link units (I use frequently) and section targeting (I generally don’t use). Experiment with different layouts, ad designs and formats and make sure you track results with channels.

For more seamless integration with the content, blend ad units into the background of your blog. Choose a bold color for the ad title to help draw attention to your ads while ensuring that users don’t confuse ads with content.
