dot-mobi Mobile Top Level Domain

May 25, 2006 | In marketing, web design | No Comments

Mobile Top Level Domain (mTLD) or dot-mobi, will become the suffix for Web pages that are formatted for cellphones and other wireless devices. A dot-mobi domain name costs $140 a year for trademark names and $45 a year for generic names, compared with about $10 a year for .com or .net domain names. The higher prices are meant to discourage cyber squatters from taking advantage of a new domain name. Registration will be open to generic names in September 2006.

Google and MSN are looking at advertising on cellphones, which is expected to be more effective than online advertising because the cellphone is perceived as a more personal device. Also worth noting is that in developing countries more people have cellphones than PCs. Time to brush up on web design for mobile devices.

Creating a Podcast

May 24, 2006 | In podcasting | No Comments

Next month I’ll be attending a 3-day workshop Podcasting: Creating and Publishing Audio Content Online (sold out) at a local community college. Podcasting is a term that derives its name from the iPod, the portable media player manufactured by Apple. The term “podcast” is no longer specifically associated to the iPod as it refers to any combination of software and hardware that allows its users to automatically download and store recorded digital audio files .

I’ve already experimented with at one time or another with a headset and Audacity sound editing software, played with Odeo Studio - created and published a short podcast - (don’t have the link handy), read a tutorial and listened to some informative podcasts at webmaster radio. So the question is, where do you find an audience for your podcast?

In some ways, creating and publishing your podcast is the easy part. The hard part is getting people to listen. In order to gain an audience you need to let people know you exist. Here are 12 strategies for making it easy for people to find your podcast.

Among the dozen suggestions are: Make Your Podcast Search Engine Friendly, Subscribe to Your Podcast, Interview Interesting People, Guest Blog on Related Sites and Get Listed in Directories.

Internet Marketing 101

May 22, 2006 | In marketing | 1 Comment

Friday morning we drove up to Hollyood to present my Internet Marketing 101 seminar at MacGathering 2006. After battling traffic for 3 hours, we finally arrived at the charming Beverly Garland Hotel. We ate a quick lunch and made our way over to registration to pick up our badges and wrist bands. We walked into the exhibit area and talked with several of the vendors. One notable exhibitor was RadTech, which “designs, manufactures and distributes innovative, high-tech accessories for the digitally aware”. They had a several cool devices that we wanted to buy immediately. Check them out when you get a chance.

We left the exhibits to find the seminar room and take a look at the layout. From past experience I never rely on having Internet access available even when I am assured that it is up. I was told that there would be wi-fi access and I heard that it was functioning earlier in the day, but at the time of my presentation, I wasn’t suprised that it was down. Not a problem I thought, as I had made screen captures of all the web pages I wanted to show. Feeling a little smug, I was ready to go until the room tech asked me if I had the video cable for mac laptop I was using. Uh, no. That presented a small problem if I wanted to connect to the digital projector. Fortunately we were at a Mac expo, so borrowing a cable wasn’t that difficult. Whew!

The presentation went very well and there were good questions asked by the audience. I passed around a signup list for those who wanted a “best of” list from the presentation and if you weren’t there I will make it available to you if you send your full name, city/zip and business email address (sorry, no free email addresses) to me. Make sure you put Internet Marketing 101 as the subject.

We had dinner at Tulas which I highly recommend. After that we attended the MacMixer where we had the opportunity to meet a blast from the past, Jerry Mathers aka Theodore ‘Beaver’ Cleaver. We took off shortly after that and a few hours later we were home.

Yahoo Publisher Network Direct Deposit

May 20, 2006 | In marketing | No Comments

Yahoo Publisher Network is now offering direct deposit.

We’ve just made receiving your Yahoo! Publisher Network earnings quicker and easier than ever, with the introduction of a Direct Deposit option for all publisher accounts.

As with our pay-by-check option, you’ll still need to accrue at least $100 in earnings before payment is made. However, if you’re signed up for direct deposit, we will credit your bank account on the 26th of each month, rather than by the 10th of the following month, meaning that you’ll receive your earnings approximately 15 days sooner!
