Hummer Mileage Maximizer
June 28, 2006 | In vehicles | No Comments
Some Hummer dealerships are getting creative about boosting fuel efficiency by installing an aftermarket device.
Air Synergy Labs makes the Vortex Valve that works by rechanneling and increasing the air that goes into a vehicle’s intake manifold, allowing more oxygen to be present during engine combustion. As a result, the company claims, fuel is burned more efficiently.
The downside is that attempts to boost fuel economy on the Hummer could sometimes increase vehicle emissions, contrary to the company’s claims.

Podcasting Recorder Marantz PMD660
June 19, 2006 | In podcasting | No Comments
The pocasting recorder used at the recent workshop I attended was the Marantz PMD660.
The Marantz PMD660 is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, but it has features that make more expensive, full-sized field recorders green with envy. It can run for hours on just four AA batteries. It records on Compact Flash media cards which you can find in any discount store, and will store more than 36 hours of mono on a single card. If audio quality is your key requirement, you get over an hour of pristine, uncompressed, 16-bit .wav files. Editing can be achieved right there in the field using either of two editing modes, or you can use your favorite audio editing application by transferring files to your PC-the PMD660 even has its own USB port. XLR inputs, phantom power, built-in mics and more-it’s all there in the PMD660.
Highlights
Smallest PMD yet-fits in your hand
Records uncompressed 16-bit PCM .wav files at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz
Records mono .mp3 files at 64 kbps
Records stereo .mp3 files at 128 kbps
Uses inexpensive, widely available Compact Flash media (CF)
1 GB CF card can hold over 1 hour of uncompressed stereo
1 GB CF card can hold over 17 hours (stereo) or 36 hours (mono) .mp3
Operates for four hours on four AA batteries
Two XLR mic connections with +48v phantom power
Two built-in condenser mics for easy, true stereo recordings
Stereo line I/O
Solid State Design
No moving parts-no maintenance.

Podcasting Badges from Yahoo!
June 15, 2006 | In podcasting | No CommentsToday is the last day of the podcasting workshop I’m attending at San Diego City College. I’ll have a recap of the highlights at a later date.
Before heading over to class, I discovered a podcasting page that’s worth a look. It’s the Yahoo! Podcasts page. Along with cool how-to information, there is also a way to submit the link to your podcast RSS feed if you would like to be added to the Yahoo! Podcasts site.
Here are the Yahoo! Podcasts badges you can add to your site after you have submitted your feed.

Draw and Share Diagrams on the Web
June 13, 2006 | In web apps | 3 CommentsThe web app Gliffy is an online drawing program that claims to replace desktop software such as Visio or Smartdraw.
You can create:
Flow Charts
Workflow documents
Class Diagrams
Network Diagrams
Website layouts/wireframes
Floor plans
Gliffy allows you to export your diagrams in the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format, an open standard. Once you have the SVG file you can open it with any illustration programthat supports SVG, like Microsoft Visio and Adobe Illustrator.
