Army’s Diesel-Electric ‘Aggressor’ Vehicle

Aggressor Hybrid

According to a recent article in Popular Mechanics the Army’s auto research arm—part of the Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC)—has developed a battery-dominant, hybrid-electric drivetrain with a diesel engine-generator.

A wider, 66-in. body design makes room for high-performance acceleration—as military vehicles go—with the second-gen Aggressor set to rev from 0-40 mph in four seconds and top out at 80 mph. But speed is not the main attraction here; stealth is. The Aggressor’s design provides battery-only operations, allowing it to switch into “silent mode” with a reduced thermal signature. Combine that with extended range and exportable power, and this should be one tough-to-detect AMV for missions involving communications, surveillance and targeting.

It definitely has a kick ass look to it.

Importing Blogger into WordPress

Friday, May 18th, 2007

A few years ago I migrated from Blogger to WordPress. It was a messy procedure and I had to spend considerable time cleaning up code fragments after the move.

Now there is good news for those of you thinking about moving from Blogger to WordPress.

If hosting and installing WordPress yourself is too challenging then go to WordPress.com (a hosted version that doesn’t require any technical knowledge) to create your new WordPress blog. To import your Blogger posts into WordPress go to your WordPress (version 2.2 or newer) dashboard and click Manage > Import > Blogger to access the default importer plugin.

Howdy! This importer allows you to import posts and comments from your Blogger account into your WordPress blog. To use this importer, you must have a Google account, an upgraded (New, was Beta) blog, and it must be on blogspot or a custom domain (not FTP). The first thing you need to do is tell Blogger to let WordPress access your account. You will be sent back here after providing authorization.

You click the authorize button to start the process to import all of your posts, comments, categories (Blogger labels) and users. Simple!

Caveat: the Blogger importer script will not import the Blogger images to your WordPress installation.

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Imagekind is a gallery, print-on-demand, and frame shop on the web.

One community for creating, buying, and selling art, Imagekind introduces a new development in print-on-demand services. Artists of all types including, digital photographers, photographers, illustrators, graphic designers, painters, printmakers and draftsmen, can sell their work online with a free Imagekind online art gallery. Customers can readily find a wide variety of wall art, framed art, digital photography and poster art on our site. Imagekind fine art prints can be ordered with millions of combinations of frames, papers, canvas types, and sizes.

You can markup your artwork as you see fit. Imagekind will automatically give you base costs for your image in each of the available sizes and different media options. From this base cost, you decide what markup will be applied to the artwork and displayed as the final cost to customers. You can choose to mark-up either using percentage terms or dollar terms. This markup amount is what you will earn on any artwork you sell and buyers will pay for any framing and shipping costs. You carry no overhead or inventory by using Imagekind

To sell your images, you upload your JPEG, PNG or TIFF image making sure that sure your image is big enough to make a small print. Your image must be at least 800 pixels on each side (e.g. 800px by 800px) to trigger the smallest print size. Watermarking is available. Imagekind is worth a look for both sellers and buyers.

Save on Gas – Save the World!

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

You can improve your by driving more efficiently, keeping your car in shape and planning and combining trips. Those choices will reduce (the use of gas) what you can.

You can help save the world by offsetting what you can’t.

According to the Carbon Fund, the average car emits twice its weight in CO2 each year.

Carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels are causing the Earth’s climate to change and warm, which will have catastrophic results if we do not act to reduce them. Carbon dioxide emissions are about 40% higher than they were before the Industrial Revolution and at their highest levels in recorded history, covering over 650,000 years. The effects of climate change can be seen now. Temperatures are already increasing, glaciers are receding at unprecedented speeds, whole chunks of the Antarctic ice shelf are breaking off, warmer seasons are becoming longer, and storms are becoming more severe and causing more and more damage.

Offsetting your carbon footprint allows you to become part of the solution to climate change by supporting the reduction of equal to your carbon emissions.

Use the handy calculator to determine exactly how much CO2 you’re responsible for.

Carbon Calculator

Then there are high gas prices, car payments, insurance, depreciation, parking, repairs, maintenance, and nearly one hundred other expenses add up so quickly and silently that most car owners don’t even notice—they just see how little money they have left at the end of the month and wonder why. That’s according to Chris Balish, author of How to Live Well Without Owning a Car.
