The New Lights are Due on My Street

March 31, 2008 | In general | No Comments

I live in an older neighborhood that has a web of overhead power, cable and phone lines. You can see how congested it is in the first photo. Contractors are digging trenches a few blocks away to lay fiber and maybe the poles and wires will all come down at some far-off future date.* Meanwhile, I captured this 10-minute street light lamp exchange this past weekend just outside my front door.

Yeah, I’m in a bit of a TZ frame of mind today. ;)

*Update: According to the city’s most recent estimate, it will take 53 years and cost $2.87 billion to remove all overhead wires.

Powerless to Resist Endless Web Data

March 17, 2008 | In general | No Comments

Just read a fascinating article, Why We’re Powerless To Resist Grazing On Endless Web Data, from the WSJ.

In other words, coming across what Dr. Biederman calls new and richly interpretable information triggers a chemical reaction that makes us feel good, which in turn causes us to seek out even more of it. The reverse is true as well: We want to avoid not getting those hits because, for one, we are so averse to boredom.

It is something we seem hard-wired to do, says Dr. Biederman. When you find new information, you get an opioid hit, and we are junkies for those. You might call us ‘infovores.’ ”

For most of human history, there was little chance of overdosing on information, because any one day in the Olduvai Gorge was a lot like any other. Today, though, we can find in the course of a few hours online more information than our ancient ancestors could in their whole lives.

Just like the laser and the cat, technology is playing a trick on us. We are programmed for scarcity and can’t dial back when something is abundant.

The same happens with food: Because at one time we never knew when the next saber-toothed tiger might come along for food, it made sense to pack on the calories whenever we chanced upon them. That’s not much help in today’s world of snack aisles and super sizes.

The article uses a cat and a laser pointer as an example to explain the addictive aspects of Web use and relates that to people, when given the option to allow comments on a prominent blog, voted against changing the existing policy because like cats chasing a laser, they wouldn’t be able to stop themselves from spending the additional time reading the comments.
