Audioblogger Discontinued

October 11, 2006 | In blogging, feeds | No Comments

Hello,

As of November 1, 2006, Audioblogger will no longer accept phone calls. MP3s made with the service will continue to be hosted and served but you will no longer be able to use Audioblogger to post new audio.

Audioblogger is an independent product, run by Odeo, Inc., a small startup company in San Francisco, CA. We are not affiliated with Google or Blogger except that we operate and provide the Audioblogger service.

Given our limited resources, we have to make tough decisions about what projects to focus on. And we’ve come to the difficult decision that Audioblogger demands too many resources, time, and money for us to continue its operation.

However, there are several other services that offer similar functionality. Odeo is not affiliated with any of these services, we only suggest them only in hopes that one or the other will be a good alternative for you.

Gabcast.com is a free service for recording by phone
Hipcast.com has a seven day free trial and lots of features
Gcast.com is another free service for phone recording

All of the phone posting services listed above are compatible with Odeo in that they produce podcast feeds, which can be imported to Odeo. Any audio file at Odeo can be posted on a blog by copying and pasting some embed code.

Odeo would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who has tried Audioblogger. If you are interested in keeping up with our other blog-friendly projects, please have a look at Twitter.com and our customizable audio players.

Thanks,
The Odeo Team

Online Feed Readers

April 4, 2006 | In feeds | No Comments

Recently I added an email subscribe feature over on this blog’s sidebar after I read that a large number of people still are not familiar with RSS, XML, readers and aggregators. So now those readers who prefer email updates of this blog’s content can to receive them by easily subscribing via email. It’s simple and no feed reader is required. See Subscribe Me! on the sidebar.

For those of you unfamiliar with feeds and readers, a feed reader is used for reading and organizing RSS or Atom feeds of syndicated content. (RSS has the widest acceptance of any feed format, but Atom is much more robust and feature-rich than RSS.) Techcrunch has a feature comparsion chart of online feed readers. Currently I use Bloglines. Another feed reader that was reviewed, Rojo, looks interesting.

I haven’t tried Newsburst, but it might be worth a look. It’s advertised as a personalized tool that tracks virtually any type of information on the Web: news, blogs, shopping lists, weather, search results, alerts, auctions and more.

RSS-to-IM services such as that of immedi.at provide a means to get new news delivered to the instant messenger of your choice.

Matt Haughey writes about server side feed reader and publisher reBlog. Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to install and use reBlog on your own PHP/MySQL server, along with a video demo of how he uses reBlog as his own reader. You’ll need a web server with PHP and access to your own MySQL database to install reBlog. reBlog is different from other online readers as you store and keep your own data. You don’t depend on someone else’s server being up or down. Tip: add a robots.txt file to tell search engines to stay out of the “public” reBlog directory and possibly add authentication to the output file.

Here’s a cool tip for those who want to view a password protected gmail feed in Bloglines:

What is ‘Web Clips’?

December 14, 2005 | In feeds | No Comments

Web Clips shows you news headlines, Gmail tips, blogs, any RSS and Atom feed, relevant sponsored links, and more — right at the top of your inbox and messages. Receive updates from your favorite sites without having to leave Gmail!

Here’s how to customize which Web Clips are shown in your account:

  1. Log in to your Gmail account.
  2. Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page, and open the Web Clips tab.
  3. Browse popular clips by selecting a topic link along the left. Search for feeds by entering topics that interest you — use this feature like you would Google Search. Or, enter specific feed URLs.
  4. Click Add next to the clips you’d like to see in your Gmail account.

Each clip displays the source from which it was received, how long ago the clip was published, and a link to access the entire story or page containing the clip.

From your inbox, you can scroll through clips you’ve already seen by clicking < or see new clips by clicking >.

Note: Clips of your favorite RSS and Atom feeds are displayed randomly, and aren’t targeted to the contents of your mail.

One Year Anniversary

May 12, 2005 | In blogging, feeds | No Comments

Tried blogger in June 2001, but I wasn’t impressed. A few years later, when they relaunched, I came back and made my first post here on May 12, 2004.

If you like this blog, consider subscribing to it via Yahoo or Bloglines or Newsgator. Or if you haven’t already installed a newsreader, download and install SharpReader or something like it. Then subscribe to this newsfeed via your newly installed newsreader. It’s an easy way to check on updates to this blog without having to directly visit here with a browser.

Appreciate any comments you may have.

What are Live Bookmarks?

October 14, 2004 | In feeds | No Comments

Live Bookmarks is a new technology in Firefox that lets you view RSS news and blog headlines in the bookmarks toolbar or bookmarks menu. With one glance, quickly see the latest headlines from your favorite sites. Go directly to the articles that interest you — saving you time.
A site is enabled for Live Bookmarks when you see this icon on the bottom right corner of the browser. Clicking on the icon and selecting an RSS feed will bring up the Add Bookmark dialog. Select ‘OK’ and you will see Live Bookmarks with the rest of your bookmarks. Many people find it especially convenient to save Live Bookmarks in their Bookmarks Toolbar folder.
