Opera vs. Overstock

SDSU Drug Bust Email to Parents
May 6, 2008 | In general | No CommentsTO: SDSU Parents
FROM: James R. Kitchen, Vice President for Student Affairs
RE: Alert from SDSU
Dear SDSU Parent:
An ongoing police investigation today resulted in the arrest of several people suspected of selling illegal drugs to San Diego State students.
The majority of those arrests took place this morning in the College Area as part of a joint operation led by SDSU Police and the federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Related arrests have taken place over the past 12 months.
I want to assure you that San Diego State University places the health and safety of students and the rest of our campus community as our highest priority. There is nothing more important than the welfare of each and every student. Because of the excellent work done by the SDSU Police – who led this investigation – and the cooperation and support of the DEA and the District Attorney’s Office, the university is a much safer place today.
The investigation included an extensive undercover operation. Some of those arrested include SDSU students, who have now been suspended from the university pending a due-process review. Those living in campus-managed housing have been evicted.
We will continue to do what is necessary - enforcement and education – to encourage our students to make responsible choices to ensure the health and safety of our campus.
To provide updated information on the investigation and arrests, SDSU has established a special Web site at www.sdsu.edu/information.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call the Parent Hotline at (619) 594-1653.
Summer Movie Picks
May 5, 2008 | In general | 3 Comments
There’s no way of knowing what the quality will be of these summer movies. Some of them will definitely be worth seeing when they come around to your local theater. Rotten Tomatoes is a resource to get a feel for what people are saying.
“Iron Man” - You’ve already seen it.
“The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” – The first “Chronicles” was entertaining.
“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” – Fourth hat and whip adventure starring Harrison Ford.
“The Happening” – M. Night Shyamalan directs an environmental horror flick starring Mark Wahlberg.
“The Incredible Hulk” – So soon? With Edward Norton and Liv Tyler, and of course, Lou Ferrigno.
“Get Smart” – Steve Carell as Don Adams’ Maxwell Smart with Anne Hathaway as Barbara Feldon’s Agent 99.
“Wall-E” – Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class is Pixar’s latest animated story of a lonely, trash collecting robot.
“Wanted” – Graphic-novel adaptation about an elite team of assassins with Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman.
“Hancock” – Will Smith as a drunken superhero? With Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman.
“Hellboy II: The Golden Army” – Guillermo del Toro directs and Ron Perlman stars as Hellboy for this sequel. The first Hellboy was a supernatural action-thriller with a good blend of humor. Remember Perlman in “Beauty and the Beast”, opposite Linda Hamilton?
“Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D” – Titled after the the Jules Verne novel, this digital-3D family adventure stars Brendan Fraser.
“The Dark Knight” – Directed by Christopher Nolan. Christian Bale returns as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Heath Ledger takes his final bow in his role as the Joker.
“The X-Files: I Want to Believe” – How will Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny play this?
“The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” – Brendan Fraser is back for the third installment. This time it takes place in China.
“Blindness” – A town is hit with an epidemic that causes blindness. Only Julianne Moore has the ability to see.
“Pineapple Express” – James Franco and Seth Rogen star in a comedy/chase movie about a stoner and his dealer.
“Babylon A.D.” – Vin Diesel plays a mercenary escorting a woman from Russia to Germany -or is it China- in this sci-fi story.
“Traitor” – A CIA agent played by Don Cheadle infiltrates a terrorist group. With Guy Pearce.

The New Lights are Due on My Street
March 31, 2008 | In general | No CommentsI live in an older neighborhood that has a web of overhead power, cable and phone lines. You can see how congested it is in the first photo. Contractors are digging trenches a few blocks away to lay fiber and maybe the poles and wires will all come down at some far-off future date.* Meanwhile, I captured this 10-minute street light lamp exchange this past weekend just outside my front door.

Bright New Street Light
Yeah, I’m in a bit of a TZ frame of mind today.
*Update: According to the city’s most recent estimate, it will take 53 years and cost $2.87 billion to remove all overhead wires.
