Enhance Your Podcast - The Levelator
March 8, 2007 | In podcasting | No Comments
Have you ever recorded an interview in which you and your guest ended up at different volumes? How about a panel discussion where some people were close to microphones and others were not?
The Levelator is free software that runs on Windows (2000, XP or Vista) or OS X (10.4 /Tiger or 10.3/Panther) or Linux, that adjusts the audio levels within your podcast or other audio file for variations from one speaker to the next. It’s not a compressor, normalizer or limiter although it contains all three. It’s much more than those tools, and it’s much simpler to use. The UI is dirt-simple: Drag-and-drop any WAV or AIFF file onto The Leveler’s application window, and a few moments later you’ll find a new version which just sounds better.

Podcasting How To Resources Part 2
September 27, 2006 | In podcasting | No CommentsWhat is Podcasting?
Podcasting is the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio or video programs, over the Internet using syndication feeds, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers.
What Is RSS?
RSS is a format for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites, including major news sites like Wired, news-oriented community sites like Slashdot, and personal weblogs. But it’s not just for news. Pretty much anything that can be broken down into discrete items can be syndicated via RSS: the “recent changes” page of a wiki, a changelog of CVS checkins, even the revision history of a book. Once information about each item is in RSS format, an RSS-aware program can check the feed for changes and react to the changes in an appropriate way.
What is Audio Tagging?
The process of including information other than sound into these digital audio files is commonly referred to as “tagging” in which you “tag” the audio file with additional information that describes the audio file. The original standard for tagging digital files was developed in 1996 by Eric Kemp and he coined the term ID3. At that time ID3 simply meant “IDentify an MP3″.
Where to Submit Your Podcasts?
By submitting your podcast feed to the greatest number of specialty podcast search engines and directories, you make it easier for other people to find your podcasts, while getting your audio podcast noticed.
What Now?
See Podcasting How To Resources for a list of recommended guides to podcasting. Target a niche and make yourself heard over the dull roar of the competition so that you stand out. Deliver something where there is a demand and where you can be compelling about it as well—that’s the ticket for success!

Podcasting Recorder Marantz PMD660
June 19, 2006 | In podcasting | No Comments
The pocasting recorder used at the recent workshop I attended was the Marantz PMD660.
The Marantz PMD660 is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, but it has features that make more expensive, full-sized field recorders green with envy. It can run for hours on just four AA batteries. It records on Compact Flash media cards which you can find in any discount store, and will store more than 36 hours of mono on a single card. If audio quality is your key requirement, you get over an hour of pristine, uncompressed, 16-bit .wav files. Editing can be achieved right there in the field using either of two editing modes, or you can use your favorite audio editing application by transferring files to your PC-the PMD660 even has its own USB port. XLR inputs, phantom power, built-in mics and more-it’s all there in the PMD660.
Highlights
Smallest PMD yet-fits in your hand
Records uncompressed 16-bit PCM .wav files at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz
Records mono .mp3 files at 64 kbps
Records stereo .mp3 files at 128 kbps
Uses inexpensive, widely available Compact Flash media (CF)
1 GB CF card can hold over 1 hour of uncompressed stereo
1 GB CF card can hold over 17 hours (stereo) or 36 hours (mono) .mp3
Operates for four hours on four AA batteries
Two XLR mic connections with +48v phantom power
Two built-in condenser mics for easy, true stereo recordings
Stereo line I/O
Solid State Design
No moving parts-no maintenance.

Podcasting Badges from Yahoo!
June 15, 2006 | In podcasting | No CommentsToday is the last day of the podcasting workshop I’m attending at San Diego City College. I’ll have a recap of the highlights at a later date.
Before heading over to class, I discovered a podcasting page that’s worth a look. It’s the Yahoo! Podcasts page. Along with cool how-to information, there is also a way to submit the link to your podcast RSS feed if you would like to be added to the Yahoo! Podcasts site.
Here are the Yahoo! Podcasts badges you can add to your site after you have submitted your feed.
