This coming Sunday, April 20th, brings EarthFair back to Balboa Park (San Diego). It is is the largest free annual environmental fair in the world. EarthFair 2008 is the 19th anniversary of the event. Each year, the EarthFair draws around 60,000 visitors.

has traditional conservation organizations, wildlife preservation groups, products made from natural and organically grown crops, organic gardening information, alternative energy vehicles, ecotourism opportunities, many alternative and traditional health care products and services, pet adoption services, clean air and clean water products, rainforest preservation groups … the list goes on and on.

If you arrive after about 10:30 am, there is often no parking immediately adjacent to the Park. If you drive and plan to arrive after 11 am, don’t drive directly to the Park. A free shuttle service will take you between the Fair and an off-site parking location at City College. From the 163 freeway exit follow the signs. From Park Blvd., you will turn on Russ. Go to the end and turn right. You can park in the lots opposite Garfield Jr. High School; the shuttle stop is marked with a sign. The shuttle runs from 10:30 am to 6 pm.

There’s something alien about the concept of a hybrid being less eco-friendly than a . I’m not making that observation from a lesser of two evils alien vs predator point of view. It’s more about debunking false claims and breaking the endless cycle of dependency on foreign (alien) oil.

Contrary to George Will’s disinformation, the Prius has not morphed into a sort of traveling toxic-waste dump trailing clouds of diabolical fossil-fuel exhaust. The reality is hybrids can significantly cut global-warming pollution, reduce energy use, and save drivers thousands at the pump.

The irony of this debate is that you might be better off getting a really fuel-efficient regular car.

Zonbu is selling a simplified, for $99 and a $12.95 monthly subscription charge. The company says the 15-watt PC can save up to $10 a month in electricity compared with a standard 200-watt PC.

The computer is the size of a cigar box and uses a low-power, Intel-compatible microprocessor. It comes with 4 gigabytes of flash memory instead of a disk drive. It also lacks a fan, another big energy user. By eliminating fans and hard drives, the device is completely silent.

The Zonbu PC uses a Gentoo version of the Linux operating system and will come with a range of software applications such as the Mozilla Firefox Web browser, Skype voice-over-Internet service, OpenOffice software suite and a number of games. With your subscription to the Zonbu service, you gain access to an additional 25 gigabytes of online storage space, where your files are automatically encrypted and stored on backed up servers.

The concept here is that companies can sell the PC the same way cell phones are sold, subsidizing the cost of the hardware with the revenue from the monthly service charge.

In its inaugural year, Blog Action Day will be co-ordinating bloggers to tackle the issue of the environment.

Bloggers can participate on Blog Action Day by publishing a post on their blog which relates to an issue of their own choice pertaining to the environment. Posts do not need to have any specific agenda, they simply need to relate to the larger issue in whatever way suits the blogger and readership. Our aim is not to promote one particular viewpoint, only to push the issue to the table for discussion.

Regular readers of this blog know that I have a treehugger category. New readers may also want to look at my vehicles category which at first glance may not seem environmentally friendly, but you generally have to read the entire post to see where I am going with it.

The General Motors Hummer off-road-vehicle is known for its in-your-face styling and off-road performance. It’s also known for poor fuel economy. GM believes it can improve both Hummer’s image and fuel economy.

Congress is about to boost corporate average fuel economy, or CAFE. The H2 Hummer is currently exempt from CAFE regulations because its gross vehicle weight exceeds 8,500 pounds. But in 2011, the exemption for big trucks is scheduled to rise to 10,000 pounds.

At 13-14 mpg the H2 Hummer has a fuel economy problem.

GM plans on introducing a mix of engines that run on diesel fuel or ethanol blends. The automaker also is expected to introduce a smaller, more fuel-efficient model code named H4, that will be smaller and cheaper than Hummer’s H3 model.

For the 2009 model year, the H2 will be configured to run on E85, a blend of ethanol and gasoline. A year later, the H3 adds E85 capability. And in model year 2011, look for a line of diesel-powered trucks.

“Green” Hummers will not cause environmentalists to trade in their Prius, but any step towards reducing oil consumption is a step in the right direction.

You can improve your by driving more efficiently, keeping your car in shape and planning and combining trips. Those choices will reduce (the use of gas) what you can.

You can help save the world by offsetting what you can’t.

According to the Carbon Fund, the average car emits twice its weight in CO2 each year.

Carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels are causing the Earth’s climate to change and warm, which will have catastrophic results if we do not act to reduce them. Carbon dioxide emissions are about 40% higher than they were before the Industrial Revolution and at their highest levels in recorded history, covering over 650,000 years. The effects of climate change can be seen now. Temperatures are already increasing, glaciers are receding at unprecedented speeds, whole chunks of the Antarctic ice shelf are breaking off, warmer seasons are becoming longer, and storms are becoming more severe and causing more and more damage.

Offsetting your carbon footprint allows you to become part of the solution to climate change by supporting the reduction of equal to your carbon emissions.

Use the handy calculator to determine exactly how much CO2 you’re responsible for.

Then there are high gas prices, car payments, insurance, depreciation, parking, repairs, maintenance, and nearly one hundred other expenses add up so quickly and silently that most car owners don’t even notice—they just see how little money they have left at the end of the month and wonder why. That’s according to Chris Balish, author of How to Live Well Without Owning a Car.

Save on Gas – Save the World!
