Video Downloading Tips

Embedded video, progressive download, streamed video—you may have heard these terms before but what do they mean? Begin by understanding the difference between them and then reading the related posts that follow.

Flash Video Delivery Techniques at a Glance (via Adobe)

Embedded Video
Entire SWF file must be downloaded to the client and loaded into memory in order to play back video.

Progressive Download
FLV files are progressively downloaded, cached, and then played from the local disk. The entire video clip need not fit in memory.

Streaming Video
FLV files are streamed from Flash Communication Server, played on the client’s machine, and then discarded from memory in a play-as-you-go method.

These and saving methods require no additional plugins or third party software.

with Firefox browser (No need for a third-party plug-in)

1) Click Tools ==> Page Info
2) Page Info ==> Click Media Tab
3) There’s a list of images and flash files that were downloaded by the Firefox browser while loading the page.
4) Scroll down the list and find the flash file.
5) Click the Save As button. Save the file on your hard drive.

Saving Flash files with IE browser

1) Click Tools ==> Internet Options
2) General Tab ==> Settings button in the Temporary Internet Files group.
3) View Files ==> Temporary Internet Files folder.
4) Click View ==> Details.
5) Click View ==> Arrange Icons By – Internet Address.
6) Right-click on the correct flash file and choose Copy. Keeping the page and IE open, paste the flash file in another directory.
