You have the skills to do the work, and the salesmanship to close the deal, but finding people who need the work done consumes too much of your time. That’s where Free Quotes World (FQW) comes in.

FQW generates targeted web development leads that are guaranteed to match your company’s profile. That profile is setup one-on-one with an account specialist so that you can be assured of getting only those kinds of leads that you want.

With FQW, you are in control of every aspect of receiving these leads. You control what kinds of leads you want to receive, how many leads you want to receive, and when you receive them. You are in complete control!

If you’re interested in growing your business, but are tired of the time it takes to find new clients, you should try out FQW. </s>

Competitors

The nature of other leads services such as guru.com, domystuff.com, elance.com, getafreelancer.com or rentacoder.com, seems to heavily favor <s>FQW is different because it targets North American companies looking to build a North American client base.

Using those other services means that you are competing with hundreds or even thousands of other developers, mostly on price. With FQW you are going up against a maximum of four other companies and you get the opportunity to personally explain what your professional services are and why they are worth paying for.

Through the end of August, FQW is waiving the set-up fee and giving away an additional $30 in free leads. You can try the company out risk-free and see just how much they can help you grow your business. If you decide you don’t like it or it’s not what you expect you can cancel and you are out exactly $0.00.

Try Out Free Quotes World Today – FREE!</s>

Update 10/30/07: FQW out of business? The handwriting was on the wall when my contact at FQW left them not very long after I first posted here. Today the FQW site was completely gone, showing only an ugly mysql_connect database error page. The lesson here is that startups with good intentions can quickly “go south” for a variety of reasons. Buyer beware.

sites open for business include elance.com, getafreelancer.com, rentacoder.com and gofreelance.com.

above-the-fold

The portion of a webpage visible in the browser window when the page first loads is decribed as being ‘above-the-fold’. The phrase is a reference to the area of a newspaper visible when folded for display in a news stand, typically containing the masthead and lead story.

A more appropriate (medium-appropriate) equivalent being “before-the-scroll”.

The concept of a fold was seen as key in the early days of the web, based on the belief that only content placed in this area of the page—usually the first 300 vertical pixels—could be guaranteed “eyeballs”. Over time, users have become more accustomed to scrolling, however the first fold continues to be highly sought-after by advertisers.

A dot-mobi domain name costs $140 a year for trademark names and $45 a year for generic names, compared with about $10 a year for .com or .net domain names. The higher prices are meant to discourage cyber squatters from taking advantage of a new domain name. Registration will be open to generic names in September 2006.

Google and MSN are looking at advertising on cellphones, which is expected to be more effective than online advertising because the cellphone is perceived as a more personal device. Also worth noting is that in developing countries more people have cellphones than PCs. Time to brush up on web design for mobile devices.

My suggestion is to compress all of those files into one large file. FTP that one large file to your server. Then Telnet/SSH to the specific directory where that file lives and uncompress it.

FTP clients such as CuteFTP Professional have a Compressed Transfers feature that allows for streaming compression for faster transfers as well as manual compress/deflate to/from ZIP, CAB or GZIP/Tarball archives. This feature compresses the files into one file, and then FTPs them across much more quickly than moving them individually.

If your FTP client doesn’t have a similar feature, then you can simply compress the files using your favorite compression program.

Then you will need to use a Telnet/SSH connection to your webhost, log in and uncompress your files using the following commands:

All of the below commands assume that you are within the same directory that the compressed file is in. To be sure type:

ls {enter}
If the file is there, you’re ready to go. If not type:
cd /big/dom/xdomain/www/directory/ {enter}
replacing the path with the correct path to your file.

If a file ends in .zip (for example, file.zip) type:
unzip file.zip

If a file ends in .tar (e.g., file.tar) type:
tar -xvf file.tar

If a file ends in .gz (for example, file.gz) type:
gzip -d file.gz

If a file ends in .tar.gz (e.g. file.tar.gz) type:
gzip -d file.tar.gz
and then
tar -xvf file.tar

If a file ends in .tgz (e.g. file.tgz) type:
tar -xvzf file.tgz

To make your .htm or .html pages process like they were .php, just add this line to your .htaccess file:

AddType application/x-httpd-php .html .php .htm

Or use:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^index.html /index.php

The .htaccess directory-level configuration file can also be used for:

Custom Error Pages
Password protection
Redirects
Prevent hotlinking of images

A lot of people seem to be missing the point of this article. What’s described is nothing more than a proof-of-concept technique; it is by no means perfect, or even the best way of masking your email address. I wrote this because it demonstrates some under-used CSS features that happen to solve a common problem. In the worst case scenario, it works as well or better than most other techniques, and at full steam, it’s pretty nifty.
